Do you know Dudhsagar literally means ‘a sea of milk’. This waterfall literally gives a feel of milk falling down from steep cliffs. 4-tier gigantic milky waterfall bordering Goa and Karnataka states is pure natural wonder of India. Shaped as diamond with crossing railway tracks is rare waterfall view you ever see in the world. Dense lush greenery of Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park adds to its beauty.
You can experience Dudhsagar falls by trekking, jeep or from passing train. Travelers coming from train have to get down at Dudhsagar railway station and walk few steps to reach Dudhsagar falls. From Mid 2019, two trains have started to halt at Dudhsagar railway station.
- Vasco- Belagavi Passenger train (06922) (Bi Weekly- Fri and Sat; leaves at 6:05AM reaches Dudhsagar falls at 8:15AM halts for 5 minutes)
- Belagavi-Vasco Passenger (06921) (Bi Weekly – Fri and Sat; leaves at 12:30 PM reaches Dudhsagar falls at 3:15PM halts for 5 minutes)
There are many trains from Mumbai, Pune and Goa to reach Vasco and Belagavi railway station.
Travelers who want to experience from train passing through Dudhsagar Falls; get in one of these trains:
- Amaravati express/Kuchhigudda Vasco (18047/17603) Mon, Wed, Thu, Sat around 10:40 am in the morning.
- Chennai / Vasco (17311) every Saturday 8:40 Hrs

Explorer’s way to reach Dudhsagar falls is to trek 6-7 hours (approx. 11km) from Kulem railway station. Walk on railway tracks, pass through tunnels for first few kilometers then you will enter Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary. Personally I don’t like to walk on railway tracks but thrilling tunnel walk, spectacular view of Dudhsagar waterfall and gorgeous trails in Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary are worth to struggle first few miles on railway tracks.
On your trail in Sanctuary you will see wooden bridge over fresh water stream connecting two ends of Sanctuary. Pass through the bridge and continue trekking or relax at fresh water stream and enjoy the scenery. I had the best relaxing time in this place on my long trek.
Third way is by taking private jeep from Kulem to Falls. Some of your travel by this mode will be off-road driving and it will take you to the base of waterfall. You can swim here but wear life jacket and be sure you where you are going as it can be deep at some places.
On your return journey, visit Tambdi surla temple; a hidden architectural gem depicting ancient India. It is exquisite 12th century shiva temple located on 3 hours trek from Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary. Walk few steps below to nearby Surla river and enjoy peaceful environment. Another exciting option is to do small trek towards Tambdi Surla waterfall. Reach temple in jeep ride from Kulem railway station or 3 hours trek from Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary.
Best season to visit: Monsoon (June end-September end) is the time when Dudhsagar falls is in full force and glory. Also, Sanctuary is blooming beautifully in flora and fauna.
So… when are you planning your visit to one of the tallest waterfall in India.
